It shows sensitivity and balance. However, the problem is even more serious than the writer alleges.
The Protestant failure to make good on Luther's principle of the priesthood of all believers and its reinforcement of the clergy system make laypeople's ignorance of the Bible a
necessity. In places like Brazil, the big statement of lay people is, "I'll have to ask my pastor."
Full-time Protestant ministry is only for those who have completed an extensive seminary training. They are the experts. With their theological language they stand between their congregants and the Bible. They are the denomination's approved interpreters.
